The prize...

What's in it for you if you win? Not much! We have no budget, but we did manage to get our hands on a few SI baseball caps - donated by our friends at The Band Shoppe in Poseyville, IN. The person submitting the winning entry will get a cap so they can shamelessly promote SI while keeping glare out of their eyes and/or preventing their head from getting sunburned, if they happen to be bald like Scott.

Contest #1

author: Scottman

Topic: Draw your Band Director
Deadline: 10:00 PM Central Time, September 17th.

Are you an artist? Do you like to draw portraits? Here's a chance to show off your artistic talent to the world!

Simply Instrumental is sponsoring the First Annual Draw Your Director Contest!

Get out your drawing utensils, take a good look at your band director, and start sketching. For the next week, we will be accepting entries for our first web site contest this season.

We will set up a gallery of the drawings on the SI web site so you can see the three or four entries we receive from our seven loyal visitors.

So get out your pencils and paper and have some fun!

As with all contests there are rules.

Here are the rules for this contest:

  1. The contest is open to middle school & high school instrumental music students only.
  2. The drawing you submit must depict your director as a human being, whether you think they are one or not.
  3. Each drawing submitted must be an original work created by the person who submits it. Don't be lazy and have someone else do the drawing for you. Also cutting and pasting images from other works of art or photos is not permitted.
  4. All drawings must have the artist's name, school they represent and the manner in which we can contact them if they win (e.g. email address, phone number, etc).
  5. Drawings can be submitted electronically (via email), given to us directly on September 13 (Tim and I will be attending the F.J. Reitz Marching Festival and the Princeton Invitational), or you can mail them to me the old fashioned way via the U.S. Post Office.

    My address is:

    Scott Leatherland
    P.O. Box 4166
    Evansville, IN 47724

  6. To be considered for judging, all drawings must be tasteful and not contain any lewd or vulgar references or language. If you want your drawing to be silly, that's cool, but we will not allow any personal attacks on anyone.
  7. Caricatures are allowed, but they must be done tastefully.
  8. Drawings can be made with any of the following items: pen (any color of ink is acceptable), pencil, marker, charcoal, or crayon. If drawings are made electronically, they must be submitted in .gif, .jpg, or .bmp format.
  9. The size of the drawings cannot exceed 8-1/2" x 11" on paper, or 800 pixels x 600 pixels if submitted electronically
  10. Judging will be performed by persons not affiliated with any band - just some people Tim and I know.
  11. The deadline for entry submission is 10:00pm Central Time on Wednesday, September 17, 2003. In other words, I must have your entry in my possession by 10:00pm Central Time on 9/17/03 for it to be considered by the judges.
  12. All decisions made by the judges are final.
Best of luck!!

We have a
The judges have spoken, and we are glad to announce the winner of the first annual SI "Draw Your Director" contest is Cody Cail from Tell City. Cody's really captured Mr. Reasoner's likeness, hasn't he? =)

We thank everyone for taking time out of whatever they were doing that we're sure was much more important than entering our little contest. Thank you all for the great drawings.

Cody -- wear that hat with pride, you've earned it!

Sincerely,
Tim & Scott
