About the Journal:

Okay. A little background. For several years now we've been traveling all over the greener pastures of southwestern Indiana to view shows, practices, camps, and other miscellaneous events associated with the wonderful activities this site promotes.

That's the good part =) The other part is that during these treks we encounter the most interesting things. This includes people, places, and things (for you School House Rock fans: those are nouns).

This feature, which is near and dear to somewhere just to the left of our hearts, is the account of the experience, the excitement, the thrill, the outright amazement that we ourselves experience relative to each and every outing.

We hope you can enjoy it as much as we do.

Sincerely,
Tim & Scott

The Journal...

Welcome to the part of the site that makes you ask yourself "why do I perpetually abuse myself by coming here?" This -- well -- thing is what we call Contest Journal.

This week Tim and I drove across scenic southern Indiana to Floyds Knobs for the Floyd Central Invitational Winter Guard & Percussion show.

There’s nothing like southern Indiana in February. I think I saw this image on a postcard once.

We live about 100 miles or so from the contest site, so that gave us plenty of time to think about the show. It had been a few months since we did any serious shooting and we wanted to be focused, so picking the right soundtrack for the trip was absolutely essential. After a brief brainstorming session, we reached a quick consensus on the music to listen to on the way to Floyd Central:

Grum Lee Acoustic’s unforgettable cover of the Queen masterpiece Bohemian Rhapsody

When Grum Lee Acoustic released the cover in 2003, Spin Magazine called it "spooky - it was just like someone resurrected Freddie Mercury just to remake this masterpiece!" Tim and I agreed, and we listened to this recording over and over again on the way over to the show.

When we got to the show, the folks at Floyd Central welcomed us with open arms.

Small white sign reads "Welcome Tom & Scort of Sample Instructional!"

I had been fighting a raging head cold all week and as we walked into the performance area, I suddenly realized that I needed another antihistamine - and I didn't have any.

I spent the rest of the show breathing through my mouth, so everyone thought I had asthma problem or was making obscene phone calls with my cell phone.

Because of bad weather to the south, some of the guards from Kentucky could not make it. That resulted in some dead time during the show. Fortunately recording artists M&M showed up put on a impromptu concert.

Will the real Slim Shady please stand up indeed!

What a great show! It was really cool because we got to see some groups performing, that we don't normally see. We look forward to seeing some more great performancesnext week when head over to Scottsburg for our first IHSCGA show of the season. See you there!
