Blogging with SI

So my youngest son (who's 8) did the funniest thing the other night.

He's sitting at the kitchen table, sniffing - a lot! - obviously needing to blow his nose (but he doesn't). My wife hollars in from the other room, "can you not breathe?" (worried about him, of course) and without missing a beat he replies, "okay" and holds his breath.

We laughed about that for hours. Now he asks me, "was that funny when I said 'okay' and held my breath, dad?" "Yes" I say, "Yes it was."

I asked someone at my office this morning how they were doing. Their reply was “I’m here.” I never really thought about it until today, but I was not aware that “here” is a condition or how someone may feel.

Commentator on the evening news:

An ambulance was dispatched to the scene of a two-car accident. Both drivers were taken to the hospital. One of the two injured drivers is in fair condition and the other is “here” according to a hospital spokesperson.

At the urging of Tim, I added Yahoo Messenger on my computer too. So if any of you have time on your hands and are REALLY bored, you are welcome to contact me. My userid is si_staffer_scott@yahoo.com. I also have a webcam and audio capabilities. That way you can actually see me when you talk to me. I have to warn you that the glare off of my bald head will be blinding, so you better wear sunglasses if you IM me and want to do the webcam thing.

This will be nice when marching season rolls around. We can communicate with each other and pass along contest results and so on.

Like Tim, I have a cable modem so even though it might look like I am online, I may not be at my computer. Therefore, if you IM me and I don’t answer I am not at my machine. You’ll probably be better off talking to someone else anyway. You know, someone who can carry on a decent conversation – and who isn’t older than dirt.

I'm trying the Yahoo Messenger (deemer_si_staff@yahoo.com) and so far I like it. There's an IMVironment called Aquarium that's pretty neat :D Feel free to contact me if you'd like -- although, a warning that a) I believe it always says I'm connected (cable modem) even when I'm not at my computer and b) I make no promises that anything I say will be nearly as witty as my stuff on the web site =)

Okay. I'm fighting with technical support on the mailing list issue of repetative emails being sent out. Here's a tip for anyone in the technical field: if you don't know an answer, don't make one up. It makes you look stupid and frustrates the pig =)

As you probably know by now, I was unable to make the North Posey show today. Fortunately Tim took the initiative and covered the show, while I slacked off.

One of the improvements you will see on the SI site this coming fall is that I will be purchasing a pro quality digital camera and using it to take photos for the site. If you have priced these cameras you know that that they commonly cost in excess of $2,000 each. So it looks like I'll have to sell Tim into slavery to afford one of those beauties. Tim doesn't mind taking one for the team so it shouldn't be a problem.

What you can expect this coming marching band season is for photos to be posted faster on the site than in the past. Of course the digital camera won't make up for my photographic ineptitude, so the quality of the photos will be pretty poor, just like they always have been.

So rejoice people who like blurry band photos posted the same day as when they were taken!

Let the good times roll!

Hey! We are getting some more people to write for us for the 2003 season. That’s cool because Tim and I are too lazy to go out and get some good stories ourselves and we have a pretty limited vocabulary.

Now I can concentrate on the weekly contest journals. The one I am writing for the North Posey winter guard invitational is going to be interesting. Look out for that this coming weekend.

Go Deemer! Go Deemer! It's my birthday! It's my birthday! =) I am now 73 years old! Yes!

Okay. I just got 5 SPAM email messages about a collector coin memorializing the Columbia Shuttle crash. I won't go into my "I hate when people capitalize on other's tragedies" but just from morbid curiosity of what else they might be peddling I visited their site and I ran into this Manual Cell Phone charger.

I laughed, I cried, I used up all my batteries.

I heard something a while back that I thought was funny. Any time the comedy duo Penn and Teller go to a movie and the name of the movie is spoken in the dialog of the movie, they stand up and applaud.

Stupid? Yes, but funny.

I had heard the story about Penn and Teller several months ago, but it came to mind again tonight while I was watching a show on TV. The narrator used the name of the show in sentences many times throughout the broadcast. I kept thinking I should stand up and applaud every time he did it, just for my own entertainment. I know, I am pretty simple minded and am easily amused.

Anyway, I thought that maybe we can get each of our seven loyal readers to stand up and applaud every time the words Simply Instrumental are announced at shows this fall. There’s no real point to that, but it might be entertaining to some people.

Just something to think about...

OK, so the February newsletter was sent out and now we are starting to receive reports that people got multiple copies of it in their email inboxes. I know that this might anger some people as they are neat freaks and only want a small number of email messages. For those people, please accept our sincere apologies. *nose growing*

Think of the extra newsletter as a bonus! You can forward it to your friends; print it off and line your birdcage with it, yada, yada yada.

Of course you can always just delete the message and get back to reading the other items in your inbox like how to become wealthy by using your computer only 2 hours a day, or the volumes of spam for adult-oriented sites that find their way to practically every inbox. Those are always interesting, and factual!

Tim’s right! From time to time you will see us post general thoughts about the web site, news from the world of marching bands or maybe even something unrelated. This is all part of our push to make the SI web site more entertaining. Look for some new articles this year on SI. After a lot of begging and pleading, Tim and I finally got some people with some talent to write articles for us so we wouldn’t have to. Believe me, you’ll be better off reading articles that have actual content as opposed to the typical “smoke and mirrors” pieces Tim and I write that's basically filled with stuff we just make up.

Many of you know John Stutsman from both IM and SI, where he has written many articles and has been a fixture on the message boards. John is going to write a series of articles for SI in 2003 called “_______.” Actually it doesn’t have a name yet. We’re working on it. Get off our back already!

There is also a series of articles that will be written by several “guest authors,” if you will. These are called “A day/week with me.” Various people associated with bands, guards and drumlines will write articles about what it is like to hang out with them for a while. The first one of this series is already on the site. It was written by Jolie Lindley, the Paoli guard director. She is an outstanding writer…and a babe! Wait, did I say that!?! I’m married! I hope my wife doesn’t read this, or she’ll ban me from the Internet, or even worse – make me get an AOL account! Now THAT’S scary!

Welcome to the introduction of "Blogging with SI". Blogging, to you crazy novices out there, is a publishing tool that allows Scott and I to "push" to the website miscellaneous items or information that doesn't really fall into an existing category on our site. This might contain commentary from one of us, thoughts about the activity or season, or just a note or two about something that may have happened to us during a show or at camp.

It's an informal platform for us to just express ourselves as we see fit. It won't necessarily be updated regularly - more "as the mood strikes us" (assuming we'll strike back of course)......

Have a great time on our site & let us know your thoughts & ideas - because, lest you forget, we continue to strive to become "the most mediocre marching band web site in Indiana".....

See ya!

Tim & Scott
